I’ve always dealt with allergies, sensitivity, and autoimmune disease. Years ago, I started researching cleaning products and the chemicals in them. Did you know they really aren’t regulated well? It’s not like food. I decided to start trying to go chemical free in our home for better health and over all well-being. Let me say, my husband wasn’t happy. He loves all the smell good things with fragrance, smelly dryer sheets, and will clean anything with bleach. To this day he struggles a bit and tries to sneak in air freshener.
After removing the chemical cleaners, I noticed a difference in my overall health and energy levels. Then, in conversation, a friend asked me about my beauty products. I hadn’t really thought much about it (outside using aluminum free deodorant). I didn’t realize our soaps, shampoos, makeup, and other personal care items are not well regulated either. You put them on your skin every day! At that point, I removed toxins and harsh ingredients from my beauty products as well. Let me tell you, it makes a difference and especially if you have an auto immune disease.
Here are the products that I use, stand by, and recommend to anyone who wants to reduce chemicals in their household.
Norwex Products

Norwex is simply amazing. They have microfiber cloths that you use with water to clean and disinfect your house. Yes, disinfect with water! Don’t believe me? Watch the Norwex chicken video on YouTube. It will blow your mind.
In addition to their cloths, they have a variety of other products to reduce chemicals and clean your home. Here’s my list of must haves:
- Envirocloth- I clean everything with it. It’s the basic clean all cloth and disinfects.
- Window cloth- These literally clean glass with just water and better than Windex. Not kidding.
- Body cloth- Life savers. Those days you can’t give the kids a full bath (camping), use these to wash them up with water. I have a different color for each kid.
- Vegetable cloth- This cloth cleans potatoes like you would not believe. Use it to clean all your produce.
- Cleaning paste- This stuff does it all. Try it on your tile grout first. Insane!

Beautycounter Products

Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. They focus on safety, sustainability, and being an advocate for the future. Their products are the best! They smell great, are safe, and are high quality.
Here are my top five products that I use day in and day out. Note, it was hard to choose five!
- Deodorant- Their deodorant is the best aluminum free one that I have found and I have tried A LOT. I love the coconut scent.
- Face wash- I use Countercontrol but there is a little quiz online that will help you find the right one for your skin type.
- Bar soap- I am still an old school bar soap person and their soap is amazing. It smells so good and gives me life. They have body wash too.
- Sunscreen- They have face sticks, lotions, and spray sunscreens. I break out with normal sunscreen and will only use theirs now. I use it on the kids too.
- Lip balm- Their lip products can’t be touched. Around the holidays, you can get awesome sets with a variety of colors. Even our girls love their lip glosses!

Fluoride free toothpaste
Now, I just started using this with a recent autoimmune flare up. I did not know the worries behind fluoride until I started researching it. I now use the Hello brand and really like it. But, in general, take the time to research fluoride and things it can cause in your body. It’s also in water so your body just may be on fluoride overdrive.
Water Filters
I’m a Director of beverage by day soooo….I’m not going to talk bad about any specific beverages. However, my note to you is, filter your water at home and know what you are drinking in your bottled water. We choose to filter chlorine out of our water using a full home water filtration system and for drinking water I use a filtered pitcher. It filters fluoride and many other things out of the tap water.
That is about it for major things in our house. Hopefully, this has helped give some product options for your reduced chemical household. I hope that you all will love them as much as I do.
